About the event
hiker ignites some dry brush at the bottom of a Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains North East of LA ( N34°19.16' W117°57.64' ) while trying to light a camp fire. The winds out of the North pushed the fire up the south wall of the Canyon, and it burned over the top of the ridge south into the neighboring canyon where it is burning down the northern wall and moving across the ridge to the east. The fuel is primarily dense, dry brush and dead grass. On the North side, the fire seems to be holding at the base of a dry creek bed, but if the winds shift to be out of the south there is a high potential for the fire to jump the creek bed and work its way up the Northern Wall. This is a highly remote area of the San Gabriel mountains with little access for ground crews, so this fire will be highly dependent on air resources. Currently, the fire is approximately 960 acres, with great potential for spreading.
